Australian driver's license cards include a variety of technological and visual security features to provide a higher level of security and protection against identity theft and fraud. The security features on the card also make it easier to identify forgeries and difficult to replicate.
The security features include:
-to capture and securely store digital facial images and digitalized signatures
-a software with facial image recognition abilities that measures key facial features, comparing a person’s facial image with other images held by the Department of Transport and Main Roads
-a chip with stronger security capability to verify authentication (no longer visible but still inside the card) and improved privacy protection
-a variety of visual and technological security measures, such as holograms and special inks.
Facial image recognition
Facial image recognition is a form of biometric technology that measures key facial features in a digital photo using a special equipment and software, such as the distance between eyes, mouth and nose.
The software will compare the characteristics of the photo with those of other photos stored on file.
Two persons do not share the same facial characteristics even in the case of identical twins.
Your signature and facial image are captured digitally and stored when you make an application for a new card.
The rules for the obtaining of licences vary between states and territories, but a driver licence issued in one Australian state or territory is generally recognized and valid in the other states and territories. The minimum driving age for drivers varies between states and territories. The minimum unsupervised driving age is 18 years in Victoria and 17 years in all other states (New South Wales, South Australia, Victory, Western Australia and the ACT).
Prior to your card being issued, your facial image will undergo an image identification one-to-many comparison to all facial images that are currently stored on the Department of Transport and Main Roads licensing database. If your facial image matches another customer record, the card will not be issued and the matter further investigated. Where appropriate the matter may be referred to the Queensland Police Service for further action.
If you conduct another transaction with us, for example you apply for a replacement driver licence, your facial image will undergo an image verification one-to-one comparison with your previously stored facial image.
This process helps prevent people from unlawfully obtaining multiple cards under different names, which helps reduce identity theft and identity fraud.
Australian driver's license can be ordered anytime and received a week later.
